How to plan an offroad route (Moto, Quad, 4x4 & SSV) without spending the evening?

Route planning has long been the nightmare of the offroad enthusiast. Discover how Stracks changes the game compared to the manual method.

It's Friday night. You want to ride or drive tomorrow morning. You sit in front of your computer, open maps, Google Earth, and your favorite track editor. Two hours later? You are still there, clicking point by point trying to connect two forest paths.

Route planning has long been a nightmare for enduro riders, quad riders, or 4x4 drivers. Today, we compare two schools: the classic manual method and intelligent generation.

The Classic Method: VisuGPX and Map "Surgery"

For years, tools like VisuGPX or BaseCamp were kings. They are excellent for analyzing an elevation profile with precision or manually retouching an existing track to the kilometer. However, to create a trip from scratch, the method imposes heavy constraints:

  • Time-consuming: You have to know the terrain or scrutinize the satellite view to guess if a path is passable by 4x4 or bike.
  • Uncertainty: A line on a map does not guarantee that the path is open or without barriers.
  • Transfer: Once the track is done, you have to export it, send it to the phone, tablet, or GPS...

It's an expert method, but it kills spontaneity.

The Modern Method: Stracks and the Dedicated Algorithm

Stracks was developed to overcome this slowness. The approach is radically different. Instead of drawing, you ask.

"I want to do a 2h loop." or "I want to go from this point A to this point B."

The algorithm instantly analyzes thousands of paths to maximize the percentage of trails (often > 80%) and avoid tarmac. Where a manual trace on VisuGPX takes 45 minutes, Stracks generates an optimized proposal in 3 seconds, whether you are behind handlebars or a steering wheel.

The Verdict: Do You Have to Choose?

If you are preparing for the Dakar Rally or a fine topographical analysis, manual editing tools remain useful. But for 90% of weekend outings, when the urge to go out takes you, immediacy prevails.

Don't waste more time in front of a screen. Save it for the terrain.
